The Ultimate Guide to Red Crystals: Types, Effects, Energy, Taboos, and Identification Tips
When it comes to love and romance, most people think of red crystals. In fact, there are many types of red crystals, and when combined with other gemstones in a colorful bracelet, their energy becomes even more diverse. This article will share with you the types, effects, and identification tips for red crystals, along with wearing taboos.
Types of Red Crystals
All products on the market labeled as “red crystals” are fake.
There are no natural red crystals, just as there are no natural green or blue crystals.
Mother Earth created clear quartz, rose quartz, citrine, smoky quartz, tea quartz, black quartz, and amethyst, but not red quartz. So-called “red crystals” are either dyed or are agates masquerading as something else.
However, there are indeed crystals that look red, but they are not called red crystals. Instead, they are known as red rutilated quartz, red rabbit hair quartz, red skeletal quartz, red phantom quartz, and strawberry quartz.
These natural, Earth-born, and unaltered crystals all have red minerals coexisting within the quartz, which gives the quartz a reddish appearance.
This phenomenon is called “inclusion coloration.” Upon closer inspection, you will see that the quartz around the inclusions remains white or tea-colored, and only the minerals encased within the quartz are red.
These inclusions are often the most valuable part of the crystal and are also what make collecting these crystals so fascinating due to their rich diversity. Professional sellers won’t overlook the most profitable features!
If a seller only labels a crystal as “red crystal,” it means:
- They don’t understand crystals and are inexperienced.
- It is a dyed or fake crystal.
Naturally Red Crystals
Red Rutilated Quartz
- English Name: Red Rutilated Quartz, Venus Crystal
- Chemical Formula: SiO₂ (silicon dioxide containing rutile minerals)
- Color: Red (caused by rutile inclusions)
- Crystal System: Trigonal
- Mohs Hardness: 7
- Origin: Madagascar, Brazil
Effects of Red Rutilated Quartz
Red rutilated quartz is quite rare, and its bright appearance exudes feminine qualities, earning it the nickname “Venus Crystal.”
It is believed to attract wealth, ward off evil, improve blood circulation, and enhance vitality and enthusiasm.
Red rutilated quartz is said to attract wealth and health, boost vitality, confidence, and success.
It helps regulate blood flow, alleviate menstrual pain, and assist with women’s health, including hormonal balance, by energizing the lower three chakras (root, sacral, and solar plexus).
For those lacking energy, vitality, or sufficient sleep, red rutilated quartz can replenish energy, increase motivation, and improve focus.
How to Identify Authentic Red Rutilated Quartz
To identify genuine red rutilated quartz, rely mainly on visual inspection, tactile feel, light refraction, and hardness.
Visual Inspection: The formation environment of natural red rutilated quartz often includes some impurities. When purchasing red rutilated quartz jewelry, if you can see faint, uniform, fine horizontal lines or fibrous inclusions, it’s likely genuine. Fake red rutilated quartz is often made from poor-quality crystal fragments, glass, or other materials that are melted, artificially processed, and dyed, and they won’t have these fine, uniform lines or fibrous inclusions.
Grading and Quality of Red Rutilated Quartz
The value of red rutilated quartz can be influenced by factors such as color, clarity, the density and attractiveness of the rutile inclusions, and the overall quality of the stone. Red rutilated quartz with rich red color and clear rutile inclusions is usually more desirable and valuable.
Wearing Taboos for Red Rutilated Quartz

- Do not continue wearing a broken red rutilated quartz bracelet.
- Avoid wearing it in places with negative energy.
- Do not wear it while sleeping.
- Remove it during sports or household chores.
- Avoid contact with hard objects.
- Minimize contact with dust.
Should Red Rutilated Quartz Be Worn on the Left or Right Hand?
Red rutilated quartz bracelets are generally worn on the left hand, following the principle of “left in, right out.” Most rutilated quartz is projective, so it is best worn on the left hand to absorb its energy.
Can Red Rutilated Quartz Be Worn While Sleeping?
Sleeping is a state of subconscious activity. If you are sensitive to energy, wearing a crystal that doesn’t aid sleep might affect your sleep quality. Moreover, during sleep, you might accidentally pull on the bracelet, so it’s recommended to place the bracelet in a demagnetizing cup while sleeping to recharge both you and the crystal!
How to Care for Red Rutilated Quartz
Red rutilated quartz is fragile, so take care to avoid heavy pressure, impacts, high temperatures, and strong acids or alkalis. Avoid contaminating it with oils from your hands. If you find dust on the quartz, do not use a feather duster. Instead, gently wipe it with a soft, lint-free cloth to avoid scratching the crystal.
Even the best red rutilated quartz jewelry can’t withstand the test of time and external damage, so regular maintenance is essential. This includes both everyday wear precautions and demagnetization and purification.
Store your red rutilated quartz collection in a sealed glass cabinet or display box to reduce dust accumulation and minimize contact with hands, preventing damage.
Avoid placing your collection too close together. If one piece is disturbed, it might cause others to fall like dominoes.
Ensure that display cabinets are stable and secure.
You can place the crystal near a mirror to reflect light onto its surface.
Avoid placing the crystal under hanging pictures or other objects that might cause it to fall if disturbed.
How to Demagnetize and Purify Red Rutilated Quartz
Due to prolonged wear, red rutilated quartz requires periodic purification, typically every 1 to 3 months. Even though red rutilated quartz needs regular cleansing, from a scientific perspective, dead skin cells attached to the quartz can breed fungi, and long-term neglect can lead to skin problems.
The standard purification method is to use Omamori salt, which does not damage natural red rutilated quartz, unlike coarse sea salt, which is corrosive. Here’s how to do it:
- Take out the red rutilated quartz.
- Prepare a solution of 10 grams of Omamori salt per 500 grams of water for each piece of red rutilated quartz. If purifying multiple pieces, increase the amount of Omamori salt but not the water.
- Place the Omamori salt in a filtering tool and immerse it in water. Wait 24 hours to complete the purification process. The waiting time can exceed 24 hours but should not be less.
- If you wish to offer a prayer, after the previous step, take out the Omamori salt and write your lunar birthday, wishes, and name on both sides of the Omamori salt paper. Place the side with the shrine stamp on the filter or bowl.
- Discard the used water and burn the Omamori salt paper to complete the process.

- Water Rinse Method: Rinse rubellite under running water for about 15 minutes.
All of these “red crystals” achieve their coloration through the inclusion of minerals like rutile, hematite, goethite, red mud, and more. Some unscrupulous sellers might dye them to make them look more valuable. A simple way to identify this is to check if the natural quartz portion of the inclusions is still white, smoky, or tea-colored. If the quartz is also red, there’s a problem.
Another lesser-known crystal is called red hematite flower quartz, where iron-rich liquid flows through quartz cracks, causing a phenomenon that makes it appear as though red petals are growing inside. Typically, only a small portion is red, and it’s not usually fully red.
There are many fakes on the market, so be cautious when buying crystals~~~
